Thinking about a lip augmentation?

Toying with the idea of getting a lip augmentation but don’t know where to start? Before you make the commitment with a provider it's important to understand lip injections from start to finish and what to expect with pre and post care.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, of the 15.9 million minimally invasive procedures completed in 2018, 2.69 million were soft tissue fillers. This makes fillers the second most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, only behind BOTOX.

Define your lip goals

Every augmentation begins with a consultation. Are you looking for subtle shape or dramatic volume? Do you want to add contours or reduce fine lines? Whatever your desired results, your provider will design an injection plan to help you achieve your desired goals.

The two most popular dermal fillers, which are comprised of hyaluronic acid, are Juvederm and Restylane. Juvederm provides a wide range of volume options from subtle to super voluptuous. Restylane is a good choice for softer, natural fullness, and smoothing vertical lines around your mouth.

After your initial consultation, your provider will be able to tell you which product will work best to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. In some cases, you may opt to use a combination of fillers, rather than just one.

What to expect with lip fillers

Lip injections take roughly half an hour and require no downtime. Prior to injection, your provider will administer a numbing cream to reduce discomfort. Then, your provider will slowly inject filler in and around your lips to attain your discussed results. Side effects include bruising and swelling at the injection sites. These can be minimized with over the counter pain medications and applying ice to the injection area. Each person is different so make sure to consult with your provider to see which solutions would work best for you.

Post Care

Changes to the size and shape of your mouth will be immediately visible after the fillers have been injected, however, final results won't be visible for about two weeks after the swelling subsides. All lip fillers are temporary and last about six months, to maintain the best results periodic treatments are recommended.
